The Prophecy
Zeus learns of a prophecy that Metis will bear a child who will surpass him in power, just as he surpassed his father Cronus.
Zeus Swallows Metis
To prevent the prophecy, Zeus tricks Metis into transforming into a fly and swallows her, thinking he has avoided the danger.
Zeus's Headache
Metis begins crafting armor for her unborn child inside Zeus, causing him unbearable headaches.
The Birth of Athena
Hephaestus splits Zeus's head with an axe, and Athena emerges fully grown and armored, shouting a mighty war cry.
Athena's Role
Athena becomes the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and crafts, and one of the most important Olympian deities.
